Get ready for an incredibly inspiring episode of Raising the Flag! We sat down with Denzel Simusialela, one of the most exciting athletes to come out of JuCo this year, known for running one of the fastest all-conditioned times in Zimbabwe’s history.
Denzel reveals his incredible season was built on rigorous offseason preparation, emphasizing that fast running requires dedicated body care. He candidly discusses the significant challenges and “cycle of injuries” faced during his freshman year at South Plains, a difficult period that ultimately taught him patience and strengthened his faith.
His journey, which began in a small Zimbabwean town, involved self-discipline and preparing even during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to an undefeated 200m record in Zimbabwe in 2021. He also credits his coach, Faith, for crucial support with food, supplementation, and competition expenses.
Denzel’s decision to commit to the University of Kentucky was deeply personal, influenced by the coaching staff’s care, particularly Coach Anderson, who acted like a father figure. He also prioritized an environment that would foster his faith.
Despite not being the tallest, Denzel highlights his exceptional elasticity and stride length as his biggest strengths, making him appear “very tall” while sprinting.
Finally, Denzel offers invaluable advice to aspiring athletes: believe in God, be patient, take care of your body, and most importantly, be disciplined. His story is a powerful reminder that struggles build character and prepare you for future success.
