The road to Africa’s biggest athletics showdown is officially paved! Ghana Athletics has confirmed that the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships will take place in Accra from May 12 to May 18, 2026.
In a letter addressed to the President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), Ghana Athletics President Bawah Fuseini affirmed the country’s readiness to host the continent’s finest athletes, following official approval from the Minister for Sports and Recreation.
Mark Your Calendars: The Official Schedule
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the Ministry have locked in a tight schedule to ensure a seamless championship experience. Here is the confirmed itinerary:
• May 8, 2026: Arrival of CAA Administrators and Technical Team
• May 9, 2026: Arrival of CAA Council Members
• May 10, 2026: CAA Council Meeting & Arrival of Competing Teams
• May 11, 2026: Technical Meeting
• May 12 – 17, 2026: MAIN COMPETITION DAYS
• May 18, 2026: Departure of all teams
Venue & Strategic Timing
The championships will be held at the University of Ghana, Legon. The mid-May dates were strategically chosen to align with the university’s academic calendar.
• Availability: The university will be on vacation between April 27 and May 29, ensuring full access to facilities for athletes and officials.
• Student Championships: The event serves as a perfect lead-in to the University of Ghana’s maiden “International Students’ Championship,” scheduled to begin immediately after on May 18.
Government Support
The event has received full backing from the state. The Minister for Sports and Recreation is set to host the CAA Council Meeting on May 10 in Accra. In line with protocol, the Minister will deliver the keynote address to welcome the council members before deliberations begin.
What’s Next?
Preparations are moving fast.
• LOC Inauguration: The Local Organizing Committee for Accra 2026 is scheduled to be inaugurated this Thursday, December 18.
• MOU Signing: The official Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the CAA is expected to be signed on or by January 10, 2026.
